Tensions Escalate in Tororo: Two Hospitalized After Attack on Shyam Tanna’s Campaign Van
Political tensions in Tororo Municipality intensified on Tuesday after a mobilization van belonging to parliamentary candidate Shyam Tanna was attacked in the Mile One area, leaving two individuals hospitalized and campaign materials destroyed.
According to eyewitnesses, the van was en route to a scheduled campaign event when it was ambushed by a group of youths alleged to be supporters of incumbent MP Apollo Yeri Ofwono. The attackers reportedly pelted the vehicle with stones, causing damage and injuring two occupants.
The injured individuals were rushed to Tororo General Hospital for treatment.
Medical personnel confirmed that both are in stable condition, though one sustained a head injury requiring close monitoring.
Shyam Tanna’s campaign team condemned the incident, describing it as “a deliberate act of political intimidation.”
Supporters gathered at the hospital and campaign office, demanding justice and enhanced protection for opposition candidates.
Apollo Yeri’s camp has not issued a public response to the allegations.
Tororo District Police confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are ongoing.
Security presence has been increased in Mile One and surrounding areas to prevent further unrest.
With days to the 15th january 2026 general elections approaching, the attack has raised serious concerns about political violence and the safety of candidates and their supporters in Tororo Municipality.
