Hundreds Rally in Tororo for National Road Safety Week

Tororo District came alive today as hundreds of boda boda riders took to the streets in a vibrant procession to mark the launch of National Road Safety Week, an initiative aimed at promoting safer roads and reducing traffic-related fatalities across Uganda.
The event, led by Tororo Woman Member of Parliament Hon. Sarah Opendi, brought together key stakeholders including RDC Hajji Sadik Bategana, Molly Cheria, Secretary for Works at the Tororo District Local Government, Thomas Emurukut, the district boda boda leader, and officials from the Traffic Police and Ministry of Works.




The procession began at the Tororo Municipal Council and wound through the town, drawing attention from residents and reinforcing the campaign’s core message road safety is everyone’s responsibility.

Uganda records over _5,000 road fatalities annually, with pedestrians and motorcyclists among the most vulnerable. In response, this year’s campaign is focusing on four key areas:

Speed Limit Enforcement Advocating for 30 km/h speed limits in urban areas to reduce crash severity.
Helmet UsePromoting consistent helmet use among boda boda riders and passengers.
Seatbelt Compliance Ensuring all vehicle occupants wear seatbelts at all times.
Public Awareness Educating communities on road safety best practices through outreach and media.

Speaking at the event, Sarah Opendi emphasized the importance of collective action “We must all play our part drivers, riders, pedestrians, and policymaker to make our roads safer. Every life matters.”

Hon. Sarah Opendi echoed the call for vigilance, urging local leaders and enforcement agencies to prioritize road safety as a public health issue. RDC Hajji Sadik Bategana commended the boda boda community for their active participation and encouraged continued collaboration with law enforcement.

The initiative aligns with Uganda’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goal of reducing road traffic deaths and injuries by 50% by 2030. Local government officials pledged to support enforcement and awareness efforts, while the Ministry of Works reaffirmed its dedication to improving road infrastructure and safety standards.

As the week-long campaign continues, similar activities are expected across the country, reinforcing the message that safer roads begin with informed and responsible road users.
