National Water Expands Services Across Bukedi Sub-Region as NRM Celebrates Manifesto Gains
By David Imaa
As the National Resistance Movement (NRM) marks its manifesto achievements, the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has showcased significant progress in expanding water and sanitation services across the Bukedi sub-region, particularly in Tororo and Busia districts.
During an interaction with George Ongwech, NWSC Area Manager for Tororo, he emphasized the alignment of the corporation’s efforts with the NRM’s commitment to protecting development gains. “We are proud to contribute to the transformation of communities through reliable water access,” Ongwech stated.
Service Expansion Highlights
NWSC Tororo has extended services to Tororo Municipality, Malaba, Nagongera, Nabuyoga, Mulanda, Kwapa, Kisoko, and Magodes.
In Busia, coverage includes Busia Municipality, Tiira Town Council, Dabani, Namugodi, Sikuda, Majamji, and Butangtsi Trading Centre.
Engineer Charles Epeet reported that 354,636 people are now served, with monthly water production reaching 136 million litres.
Infrastructure Growth
Water distribution network spans 519 km as of June 2025.
1,260 public standpipes and 17,106 new connections have been established since 2021.
Sewerage coverage in Tororo Municipality includes 37.5 km of network, serving 562 customers, while others rely on septic tanks and pit latrines.
Village Coverage
Tororo: 99 villages, 74% coverage (73 served, 26 not served).
Busia: 253 villages, 80% coverage (203 served, 50 not served).
Combined district coverage stands at 78%.
Key Achievements
Modified Tororo reservoir outlet to boost pressure.
Acquired motorized boreholes in Nyamalogo 1 & 2.
Upgraded high-lift pumps and pipe networks.
Installed a 400m³ raw water pump and booster stations at Tororo Cement and Kisoko.
Extended power grid to Kisoko and Morkatipe stations.
- Stabilized supply to Malaba border town and Osukuru Town Council.
Challenges and Sustainability
Despite facing climate change impacts and funding gaps, NWSC has launched the SCAP 100 Phase 2 project aimed at achieving 100% water coverage in all villages under its jurisdiction. This initiative reflects a forward-looking strategy to ensure sustainable water access for every household.
As the Bukedi sub-region continues to benefit from these infrastructural strides, the collaboration between NWSC and national development goals stands as a testament to progress driven by public service commitment.
