A wave of political enthusiasm swept through Tororo Municipality today as hundreds of supporters gathered at the Children’s Lions Park to witness the official launch of Shyam Tanna’s parliamentary campaign. The event, marked by passionate speeches and bold promises, drew local leaders and residents eager for change.
The rally opened with a warm endorsement from Lawrence Wamale, the LC1 chairperson, who expressed his support for Tanna’s bid for Member of Parliament. “I have thrown my heart into this race,” Wamale declared, urging Tanna to prioritize the needs of the electorate if elected.
Aketch Josephine, councillor for Bision Maguria, echoed the call for transformation, stating, “It is time for change.” Her sentiments were reinforced by Emojong Fred, a district councillor, who criticized the current leadership for failing to represent the people’s interests over the past decade. “We need someone who can articulate our ideas on the floor of Parliament,” he said.
Hon. Sarah Apadet, the district female councillor representing Tororo Municipality, rallied her supporters to unite behind Tanna. “Let us join hands and support Shyam Tanna for the change we deserve,” she urged.
Former Tororo Municipality Mayor John Opiyo, once a close ally of incumbent MP Hon. Apollo Yeri, made a dramatic shift in allegiance. “Those still supporting Apollo, your time to cry has come,” he said, calling on voters to back Tanna, whom he described as “a son of Sanjay Tanna.”
Hon. Sanjay Tanna, a prominent political figure and father of the candidate, introduced his son under the banner of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a political alliance aligned with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). He praised President Museveni for his contributions to peace and infrastructure and urged voters to support both Museveni and Shyam Tanna in the upcoming elections on January 15.
Sanjay Tanna criticized the current MP, alleging a lack of digital literacy and poor representation. He also accused Hon. Apollo Yeri of mismanaging resources meant for the municipality. “Things sent from Kampala for the public disappear on the way,” he claimed.
In his address, Shyam Tanna unveiled a five-point manifesto focused on uplifting household incomes, youth employment, education, infrastructure, and healthcare. Key pledges include:
- Establishing a job desk to connect youth with employment opportunities, emphasizing empowerment over handouts.
- Providing scholarships for top-performing students to support education.
- Restoring street lighting across the municipality to improve safety and security.
- Lobbying for the elevation of Tororo General Hospital to regional referral status.
- Advocating for the development of Nagongera Road and operationalization of the local airstrip.
Shyam also highlighted the need to prioritize the development of the underutilized rock in the area, promising inclusive service delivery and a commitment to honesty and progress for every household.
He concluded by urging his supporters to safeguard campaign materials amid reports of vandalism. “Let us protect our banners and posters from those trying to silence our message,” he said.
With the campaign season heating up, Shyam Tanna’s launch has set the tone for what promises to be a spirited contest in Tororo Municipality.
