President Museveni and Ruto endorse the  Devki steel construction in Tororo. 

The Devki Group of Companies officially launched East Africa’s largest steel manufacturing facility in Osukuru, Tororo District, marking a major milestone in Uganda’s industrialization journey. The $500 million Devki Mega Steel Plant is expected to create approximately 15,000 jobs, with 90% of the workforce drawn from local content  and surrounding communities.

The plant will rely on Uganda’s rich iron ore deposit hematite from Kabale and magnetite from eastern Ugandareducing the country’s dependence on steel imports and boosting regional trade.


 Dr. Narendra Raval: “A Dream Come True for East Africa”
In his keynote speech, Devki Group Chairman Dr. Narendra Raval described the plant as a symbol of Africa’s capacity to industrialize from within.
 “This is a dream come true not just for me, but for the people of Uganda and East Africa,” he said.

Dr. Raval announced that 400 workers had already been hired, with projections to reach 20,000 employees by 2027. He emphasized the importance of value addition within Africa and expressed gratitude to Presidents Yoweri Museveni, William Ruto, and Paul Kagame for their support.

“This project is a testament to what we can achieve when East Africa stands together,” he added.

Uganda’s Energy Minister Ruth Nankabirwa hailed the launch as a “historic” and “landmark” event. She emphasized the project’s alignment with Uganda’s mineral value-addition strategy and revealed that a Mineral Development Agreement was signed on April 2, 2025, to ensure the plant’s successful establishment.

President William Ruto: “A Monumental Step Toward Industrial Liberation”
Kenyan President William Ruto praised the plant as a model of intra-African investment and regional integration.
“This is a monumental step toward Africa’s industrial liberation,” he said.

Ruto called for harmonized industrial policies and infrastructure investment to support mega projects like Devki, reaffirming Kenya’s commitment to regional development.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni framed the launch as a turning point in Africa’s economic history.
 “Today, we are in the process of liberating Africa,” he declared.

Museveni stressed that industrialization is the key to prosperity and highlighted the plant’s potential to save Uganda nearly $1 billion annually in steel imports. He also addressed land compensation concerns, assuring that the government would manage payments fairly.
